SESM develops applied research and complex software systems. It hosts at his premises in Giugliano in Campania (Naples, Italy) an IT laboratory for the development of new middleware, and new services based on it, to be deployed in safety critical systems such as Control Centres for Air Traffic Control, Vessel Traffic Services and Homeland Protection. One of the main topics that is studied in the lab is the possibility to assess and monitor the dependability of the safety critical system that will be constituted by the middleware, and by OTS, mainly software, components. Its 60 engineers and scientists need to work in a highly dynamic and fast growing domain in which multidisciplinary background knowledge is essential to solve complex mathematical and computational problems to offer more dependable and robust solutions for end-users (such as air traffic controllers, etc.) and society (e.g. travellers, police forces, etc.,). There is an emerging need to intensify influx from universities of complementary and multidisciplinary scientific knowledge. In particular SESM is in need of knowledge on the dependability evaluation techniques and, more specifically, on safety assessment techniques of complex OTS bases SCSs (knowledge developed by FCTUC and CINI/UoN). It aims at setting the scientific basis for developing new prototype tools for the evaluation of dependability and safety of systems employed in traffic management and control centres. Due to the inherent necessity to continue assuring safety as systems become more complex, SESM is very much interested in learning how to create and implement such new technologies to maintain its competitiveness on the market. Moreover, SESM has a specific strategic need for Transfer of Knowledge: SESM it is one of the 6 industrial partners (through SELEX-SI) of the SESAR project (Single European Sky ATM Research Programme). The major objectives of SESAR are to transform the European ATM system by the year 2020 in an integrated system and to synchronise plans and actions of the federated systems and partners. SESM is in charge of the technological developments for the Safety and Security Methodology. To tackle the technological challenges of SESAR, SESM is in need of developing knowledge and expertise:
